ABOUT EDGEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL
CLASS OF '59
The Fifties spanned the period from 1947 to 1963. During the Fifties economy
grew faster than at any time in the 20th century, with millions of families experiencing for
the first time opportunities for home ownership and higher education. In retrospect the
progress of the Fifties created a very amazing popular culture.
Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in an experimental rocket plane. From that
point forward everyone living in the Fifties yearned to go faster. They had big powerful
high octane engines in their cars. This caused the need for high-speed roads that were
developed to handle commuters driving their high powered Fifties cars at high speeds
through the city. Nearly every teenager boy had his own classy Ford or Chevy.
Even the eating habits changed. Campbell's' introduced V-8 Juice. McDonald
brothers opened their first fast food stand. Drive ins of all types opened up. In 1951
prepackaged cake mixes were introduced as a convenience food. Oreo cookies debut the
same year , satisfying Americas sweet tooth. Tupperware is introduced making the
preservation of leftovers a more convenient, time saving task. Swanson TV dinners create
a Fifties frame of mind " Heat and eat . By 1957, the average American family consumes
In the Fifties, there was a revolution in car design. Cars of the Fifties made a
stylish decade. Tailfins became a popular car accessory, wanted for high speed stability.
General Motors held its first Motorama, a giant car exposition exhibiting futuristic dream
cars with emphasis on style, power, convenience and features; The four items were what
the Fifties automobiles were all about. The 1950's were the beginning of wild and exotic
cars-a decade of choices , style and speed.
